What do the numbers on the fertilizer bag mean? The numbers on any fertilizer bag refer to the percentage of primary nutrients found inside. Fertilizer is made up of three major parts:
Nitrogen (N) – promotes foliage and overall growth
Phosphorus (Urea) (P) – promotes root development
Potassium (K) – helps promote disease resistance and foliage on flowers and plants
The first number represents the percentage of nitrogen. The second number indicates the percentage of phosphorous, and the last number, the percentage of potassium.
Example: 28–5–12
28 Nitrogen 5 Phosphorous 12 Potassium
Additional information about fertilizer: Iron is another additive in some fertilizers. This additive is for the color of the grass. However, too much iron can damage the tips of the grass if applied at the wrong time. Slow release is also the key to the type of timing on the fertilizer. The lower the percentage (example: 25%) the quicker the release of the nitrogen.
